Jobing Description
Highly technical, specialized work in the maintenance, support, administration and installation of severs, hubs, switches, routers, firewalls, wiring, PCs, laptops, printers, scanners and all related computer peripherals.

Work involves providing computer support in a help desk environment by performing hardware and software installations, troubleshooting, configuring, and solving hardware, software, and complex network problems over the telephone, through remote PC administration software, or through on-site visits. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: responding to support calls from end users by providing solutions over the phone whenever possible or by on-site visits, keeping a detailed record of calls utilizing a work order tracking system; maintaining, configuring, troubleshooting, administering and installing all hardware and software components used to support networks, servers and related computer equipment; monitoring and optimizing server’s, application’s, Network’s or PC performances; writing and developing complex technical procedures; acting as a lead technical advisor to lower level technicians. An employee in this class works under limited supervision, reports to a senior technical manager or network administrator, and may supervise lower level technicians.
Performs advanced server, applications, network installation, advanced support, and administration for the City of Miami’s Information Technology infrastructure which includes, but is not limited to: e-mail, internet, intranet, software distribution, backup, and security services.

  • Resolves service requests assigned by the help desk or by a technical superior associated with network and computer software and hardware problems.
  • Independently troubleshoots network problems utilizing network management tools and remote PC administration tools.
  • Independently writes and develops complex technical procedures.
  • Acts as a lead technical advisor to lower level technicians in the resolution of technical problems and in the proper implementation and interpretation of technical procedures.
  • Reviews the work of lower level technicians.
  • Installs and configures new and existing workstations and advanced server based applications.
  • Installs enterprise standard virus protection software, backup and recovery software, electronic mail, internet soft
    ware, office automation products, and special software applications.
  • Communicates problems to management and follows through on each task assigned.
  • Analyzes complex computer hardware, software, and network equipment problems to determine causes of failure, implements appropriate remedies according to established departmental standards, and recommends to superiors appropriate action/steps to be taken to avoid similar future problems.
  • Interfaces with programming staff, operations staff, technical staff, and departmental users and customers on all computer and network related issues and problems.
  • Evaluates and recommends new hardware/software.
  • Researches, develops, and implements various technical procedures; not limited to, network backup and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Performs research on new technologies and their applicability to the City of Miami’s technical needs and advises superiors of new equipment needs.
  • Performs other related work as required

  • Skills / Requirements
    A valid Drivers License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) and an Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, or closely related field and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification or higher, and four (4) years of experience involving a combination of troubleshooting or supporting servers, workstations or network equipment in the most current released or the immediate predecessor of a Microsoft Windows-based environment, utilizing Microsoft operating systems and products (Examples: Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint, etc...). Additionally, candidates must also have considerable two (2) years experience in the following areas: Network Protocols, TCP/IP, DHCP, WINS, DNS, SMS, Microsoft Servers (Examples: ISA, Exchange, SQL, Active Directory, VPN, etc...), and/or Veritas Backup.
    OR
    Equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma, and the required MCSE certification or higher.

    A minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience is desirable.

    1. Copy of Valid Driver License
    2. Proof of Education. If submitting an Associate's degree or higher; college transcripts reflecting degree conferred is required if degree does not reflect academic major on its face
    3. Copy of Valid Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MSCE) or higher certification

    Note 1: A Valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however prior to appointment a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) must be presented to the Department of Employee Relations

    Official sealed transcripts may be required prior to commencing the selection process.
