Reports directly to shift supervisor.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Supervises all security functions during shift as assigned by supervisor. * Supervises the feeding of inmates during meal time. * Makes routine inspections of all security equipment doors, gates, fences, lighting systems, etc. * Assists with unit counts. * Reviews reports written by officers during shift and assures the reports are submitted. * Relays information from supervisors to Correctional Officers. * Assures that officers receive on-the-job training and safety training as required. * Assures that inmate workers under security supervision receive safety training. * Inspects or directs inspection of perimeter to test alarm systems, detect safety hazards and to ensure safety rules are posted and enforced. * Investigates and reports causes of inmates disturbances. * Assists subordinates with unruly inmates and other assignments. * Provides input into decisions concerning employee performance ratings, employee disciplinary and employee job assignments. * Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed. * Assist in the initial and continuous assessment of inmates needs (security classifications, jobs, programs, services, etc.) * Increase effectiveness of programs and services * Maintain visual and auditory contact with inmates assigned to unit * Maintain personal contact and interaction with inmates assigned to unit * Is a member of the Classification Team
Skills / Requirements
WORK EXPERIENCE:
* Nine months as a Correctional Officer or; * Six months as a Correctional Officer and 24 hours of college credits. LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
* Must have completed an approved training program resulting in a certificate of satisfactory completion. * Must be a Certified Correctional Officer with The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). EDUCATION & TRAINING:
* High School diploma or GED Certificate. SKILLS:
* Extensive knowledge of State laws relating to corrections. * Ability to communicate and interact with a variety of personalities. * Ability to interpret complex written/oral communication, documents and instructions. * Ability to make and implement decisions without assistance. * Ability to give instructions in a manner that provides teamwork and a cooperative spirit. * Ability to maintain high tolerance to mental stress. * Ability to understand and carry out moderately complex oral and written instructions. * Ability to obtain and maintain certification in CPR, First Aid and firearms. * Ability to work in varying climatic conditions.
